Leaf collection in Fairfield begins this week
The Town of Fairfield leaf collection will take place over four weeks beginning on Monday the week of November 15, 2010 and end the week of December 6, 2010 for all neighborhoods outside of Greenfield Hill. There is no specific daily pickup schedule. Each week bags must be curbside by Monday by 6:00 a.m. to assure pick-up some time that week.
Leaves must be in biodegradable paper bags. Do NOT seal the paper bags. The following will NOT be picked up: loose leaves, brush, branches, wood, grass or leaves in plastic bags. Bags placed outside of the Town right-of-way (along driveways, inside stonewalls or fences for example) will NOT be picked up. Greenfield Hill residents should telephone the Town Garage at 256-3177 on Monday, November 15, 2010 to arrange for leaf pickup before Thanksgiving. Greenfield Hill residents may call the following week of November 22, 2010 for one additional pick-up.
Residents are reminded to not rake leaves into the gutter or street so that the leaves don’t block the catch basins. Residents should also make an effort to keep the catch basin grates in the vicinity of their home clear of leaves and debris to prevent local flooding.

Hey Ed,
I live in Greenfield Hill and have plenty of leaves to contend with every year. I could buy $300 worth of biodegradable bags to handle all of my leaves plus my neighbors which blow over our wall due to prevailing winds. I could then call the Fairfield # and have the town or private hauler take them to the privately operated dump site for disposal. I probably have enough leaves for to fill two trucks. This is a “free” service which everyone in town pays for. I am still out of pocket for the bags and have cost the town a few dollars for the two guys and their truck to come all the way up here, load the bags and haul them down to the beach for disposal.
BUT, I don’t find putting leaves in bags very productive, nor do I want to use bags which take so much energy to produce simply to throw them away.
So, I have, in the past gotten access to a large dump-truck and manually filled it with my own labor and taken it down to the dump to empty…. But it is not free to do this. The operators charge me $200.00 per load x 2 loads or $400.00 each year to get rid of leaves the town would have picked up for free if I left them at my curb.
All administrations have over a 28 year period have rebuffed my efforts to end this type of property discrimination. How much is the town saving by having me haul the leaves five miles myself? Quite a tidy sum by any one’s calculations. My inquiries have always had negative results.
Well, a few years ago I got tired of spending this type of money on a mundane annual event. I went out and purchased a mulching mower and simply reduce the ever present piles of leafy debris into a fine dust which I blow into an unused corner of my yard to compost. I still have to do miles of walking which I really do enjoy. The exercise is strenuous, but I no longer have to pick up the wet piles and toss them over my head into the back of the truck. I save on the cost of the bags, the cost of the dump fees and save the town some dollars in hauling fees. Shouldn’t I get some tax credits because of my industriousness? Yeh, right!
hmmmm… tax credits… I agree probably not, it would cost the town money to figure out who rightfully deserved the credit and who was cheating the system. I do like the idea of skipping the paper bags. We only fill a few bags and keep the rest of the leaves for mulch. Say, can I borrow that power mulcher? jk!
We are interested in using the cool photo of your curbside leaf bags for our new website which is in the process of being designed. Are you the original owners of this photo and if so, would you be able to send us this photo for free?
Thank you kindly,
