Reflections on an exhausting campaign

Now that Election Day has come and gone, I wanted to share with you my random thoughts.

- The race for State Representative in Fairfield, shows the town is happy with the way we are represented in the Capitol. Aside from Brenda Kupchick’s narrow victory (13 votes!) the other two incumbents won easily. Remarkably, they do not represent the same party. Fairfield has finally moved past being a “One-Party-Town”.
- Party affiliations were largely hidden from campaign marketing this time around. A clear indication the candidates were focused on independent voters.
- Lawn signs. Who finds these eyesores effective?

-According to the Secretary of the State, as of 2009, the parties each have approximately 10k registered voters. There are 15k unaffiliated voters in town.
- If independents have more votes than either party, and are so coveted by the candidates, why are they not allowed to vote in the primary?
- As of now (morning Wednesday 11/3) we still don’t have a clear winner in the race for governor. The numbers are too close to call. This may be a result of two new faces to state-wide politics or, more likely, a reflection of the state’s budget crisis.
- Approximately 20,000 out of 35,000 registered voters went to the polls in Fairfield yesterday. An indication more people are interested in what our governing bodies are doing, or not doing.
- The democratic process remains stronger than campaign funding. Money can’t buy a seat in the senate.
- Robo-calls? Everyone hates them, so why do we get more of them each election cycle? Let’s figure out the worst offender and start robo-calling them at dinner time and on Sundays.
- The town papers will be free of the needlessly long letters to the editor supporting candidates.
- Take down the lawn signs.

In the comment section below, tell us what you noticed. Do you agree with me?

As of late last nite there’s a recount needed for the 132nd race (Tom Drew/Brenda Kupchick)…..haven’t heard anything yet.

Okay found out on Fairfield Patch that a recount is scheduled for Tuesday 11/9, 10am, Fairfield Senior Center…why must we wait that long??

Jennifer, I am not sure how absentee ballots are handled, but maybe that deadline is later, because of the post office. Still seems like a long time to wait.
