Fairfield High Schools Get Healthier Vending Machines

The Food and Nutrition Services Department unveiled two new vending machines at each high school in Fairfield. The machines will provide food throughout the day, except for a fifteen minute period between 1:45pm and 2:00pm for routine recalibration. They are located in the cafeterias and can be accessed throughout the day and after school.

The machines feature six rows of products. Two rows are devoted to items prepared by the school cafeteria managers, such as salads, wraps, and sandwiches. Included in these offerings are a box of raisins or a bag of baby carrots. One row has snack foods, such as reduced-fat Doritos, reduced-fat Cheetos, Baked Lays, and Stacy’s Pita Chips. Another row has snack and cereal bars, such as Rice Krispie treats, Snackwells cookies, Cocopuff cereal bars, whole grain Pop Tarts, Cinnamon Toast Crunch bars, Nutrigrain bars, and Fruity Cheerios cereal bars. A row of juices, four milk options, and six water options are also available. Items change regularly and new products may be featured.

The items can be purchased with the students’ Meal-Pay Plus card and the items bought are tracked as with the regular school lunch. Cash can also be used.

Too bad the choices aren’t healthier. I was encouraged reading salads, carrots, and then sighed as I saw the chips, krispie treats, bars and other pretend-wanna-be-foods. I guess this is better than nothing… I just wish that apples, bananas and grapes replaced the processed junk.

Wow…its been ages since I’ve stopped in here! Anyhows, the ‘healthy’ vending machine idea is a good one, esp. w/ the salads and wraps……fresh fruit should also be included
instead of some of the chips & goodies listed. I wish they had that system when I was at Fairfield High (Class of ’93!) as I did not have a lunch period at all due to having a full schedule including chorus and orchestra, which counted as classes. Thank god I had friends who were kind enough to get me something, even if it was chips, to tide me over until I got home from school. Luckily in my junior and senior years I was brave enough to ask permission to leave class a couple minutes early (provided that there was nothing important happening) to get something to eat, such as a sandwich, which was quick and easy. The best part was when if a class period was cancelled, and if it happened during when lunch was going on (at the time it was period 4, 5, and 6), I was able to relax for a bit in the cafeteria and eat without having to rush. For those students who have a full schedule such as I did, here’s hoping that teachers will give permission to let them eat in class, or allow them to leave class a few minutes early to get something to eat. It is very difficult to get through a whole day when the school day starts at 7:35am and ends 2:08pm…..at least that’s how things were when I was there.
