Apologies to my faithful leaders, I missed this breaking news by a day. Note to self: get on Ken Flatto’s PR list.
I read on the CT Post’s website about Fairfield First Selectman Ken Flatto’s proposed budget, which you can read here.
Is it really fair of Flatto to insinuate the Board of Education is asking for frivolous employees “I don’t think it’s fair to ask for significantly more staff because they’d like to have it”?. The first selectman said in reference to upcoming union contract negotiations, “My hope is the collective bargaining will end up providing more savings”. Sounds to me like he doesn’t expect anything.
I bet he now wishes he could’ve served a two-year term.

Considering how tough things are right now, I believe that Ken is doing the right thing by asking the BOE (and also other town departments) to really check to see what is truly needed in order to keep the Education and Townside budgets as lean as possible. The Education budget really needs to be looked at because that’s where folks here in town really get into a tizzy over! There are many who still feel that the Education budget needs an audit…..which is a whole other discussion.
As for the two year vs. the four year term for First Selectman, my opinion is that if it was still a two year term, basically what happens in the second year one cannot really get things done because all they’re doing is campaigning to get re-elected. With the four year term I feel that things can become accomplished, plus our town as grown over the years and I feel the need for longer term leadership. I know some folks aren’t happy with Ken but as one who knows him (and who has helped out w/ his 2005 and 2007 campaigns) he is doing a pretty darn good job considering the circumstances.
A Flatto 2 year term would have been great for many of us. the recent cuts to the education budget dont cut out “fluff” like many of his supporters would believe… they are hard cuts that limit our schools abilities to compete (anyone watching Fairfields decline in sending kids to college?) and our kids are the ones left hurting in overdrowded buses, classrooms and using computers that most of us would leave on the curb for garbage pickup.
People used to move to Fairfield because of the schools. I’m not so sure that will always be the case, sadly.
