Visit Greenfield Hill cemetery on July 19 and you will meet some of Fairfield’s most fascinating early residents and some our country’s first veterans. Experience a graveyard tour as you never have with interpreters of gravestones telling stories about their intriguing pasts. This interactive cemetery tour, presented by the Fairfield Museum, will be held at Greenfield Hill Cemetery on Bronson Road in Fairfield on Sunday, July 19 from 1pm – 3pm. (Raindate: Sunday, July 26.)
‘Meet’ Revolutionary War soldiers who fought for America’s liberty and some of Fairfield’s most remarkable residents. Get to know Isaac Bronson, a Revolutionary War surgeon rumored to plant Fairfield’s original dogwood. Come learn about Dr. Lewis Belden, an active NY physician and flutist in the choir of the church at Greenfield Hill. One interpreter, Joseph ‘Elwood’ Betts, will portray one of his own ancestors, Moses Betts, who was a Revolutionary War soldier and lived in the house that was at one time the Greenfield Hill Country Club. In all, up to 10 interpreters will be on hand to recant stories of those buried in this remarkable cemetery, which has recently undergone dramatic improvements through community clean-up efforts and has the greatest concentration of Revolutionary War soldiers in the country.
Visitors to this interactive experience will receive a map, a history of the cemetery itself, and will be free to create their own tour as they interact with the interpreters. Cost to attend this unforgettable tour is $5 for Fairfield Museum members, $7 for non–members. Call 203-259-1598 to register.
This tour is just part of a summer event series presented by the Fairfield Museum and History Center that commemorates the 230th anniversary of Fairfield’s burning during the American Revolution. Other programs include special walking tours, a lecture and a Fall Festival in September. Additionally, the museum is presenting a special exhibit: Reduced to Ashes, the 1779 Burning of Fairfield, which is open for viewing through September 13.
