Monday’s Job Search helpful hint #3 – Online meeting sites

If you listen to any career advice, the one piece of advice you will consistently hear is “network, network, network”. Most people have a hard time networking, myself included. I have found two tools on the internet that make networking easier:
www.meetingwave.com
www.meetup.com

With either of these sites you will need to create a profile and outline your interests. The amount of information you disclose about yourself is up to you. The purpose of these sites is different so you will probably want to do both.

MeetingWave bills itself as the online tool to meet people offline. As a jobhunter you want to include a bit of your target job in your profile. Then set up a recurring invite (mine is weekly) to meet with potential employers, recruiters, etc. This will allow people searching the site for available applicants to set up a meeting with you in person. You only have to show up if someone responds to your invite.

Meetup’s usefulness to the jobhunter is in it’s ability to steer you to networking events. Recruiters and career coaches have set up many networking events to meet jobhunters. Just include “job-hunting” in your profile and you will receive email invites to meetups in your area. Even established networking groups are using meetup.com to arrange their meetings.
