I’m going to start a new (hopefully) weekly feature here on HeyFairfield.com focused on things I have learned during my job search that I believe other people will find useful. These will be tips and tricks that I am using or have heard others are using. I am going to do this on Mondays to start the week off on the right foot.
To kick this off, the first tip I will focus on is your email address. One of the seminars I attended about resume writing stressed not to use a silly email address (ie. hotmama68@gmail.co, rabidsoxfan@optonline.ne) in your job search. Instead, they suggested using a simple, name-based email address such as alan.smith@yahoo.co or dkelly@hotmail.co. I think this is good advice, but not great.
Why is this not great? Because, for most people with an bachelors degree or better, you can have an email address from your alma mater. Which looks better to a prospective employer:
henrymeyers@gmail.co
or
henrymeyers@alumni.uconn.ed
In the job search there is very little time to convey who you are, so why advertise that you use hotmail.com, when you could be promoting your achievement? So get in touch with your alumni contact today to get your email address.
